In 2011, the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) lifted an estimated 6.6 million people out of poverty, making it the most effective anti-poverty measure enacted by the Federal Government. Yet, individuals with disabilities (25% of whom live below the poverty level) continue to be part of the 20% of eligible individuals still not claiming their EITC. Efforts across the country to increase the use of EITC and other favorable tax provisions have seen unprecedented results. In 2011, a public/private partnership of 800 partners in 100 cities, led by the IRS and National Disability Institute’s Real Economic Impact Tour helped over 397,000 persons with disabilities file a tax return resulting in $387.1 million dollars in refunds.

This session will examine the key strategies utilized by these partners to make this economic impact on the disability community.

Webinar participants will learn:

  • 2012 Earned Income Tax Credit updates and strategies for providing effective tax preparation services
  • Strategies to increase the number of individuals with disabilities served through VITA sites.
  • Guidance on assisting individuals with disabilities in leveraging their tax preparation experience and tax return to participate in other available financial stability strategies, including IDAs.
  • Input from an AFI grantee who utilizes VITA services to recruit IDA participants with disabilities.
  • Facilitator: Susan O'Mara, Project Director, VCU’s Work Incentives Planning and Assistance National Training Center

Speakers:

  • Richard Keeling, Senior Tax Analyst, Internal Revenue Service Stakeholder Partnerships, Education and Communication
  • Michael Roush, National Director, Real Economic Impact Tour, National Disability Institute
  • AFI Grantee - Ellen Stoffer, Director, Financial Stability, United Way of Tampa Bay
