Malachy Bishop has worked as a Rehabilitation Counselor and Educator for over 16 years. He completed his doctoral study in Rehabilitation Psychology at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, minored in Educational Psychology, and completed clinical internships in neuropsychology and rehabilitation psychology. He joined the faculty of the University of Kentucky in 2000, and is currently an Associate Professor and Program Coordinator of the Graduate Rehabilitation Counseling Program.

Dr. Bishop conducts research primarily in the areas of quality of life, adaptation to disability, and the psychosocial aspects of living with neurological conditions including multiple sclerosis, brain injury, and epilepsy. He has authored over 45 articles in rehabilitation counseling and related professional journals, 13 book chapters, and an edited book.  He has made over 30 research presentations at national and international conferences, and 13 presentations at local, state, or regional presentations, seminars, and trainings.

His currently funded research includes serving as co-investigator on a five-year National Institutes of Health P20 grant for the Center for Biobehavioral Research on Self-Management of Cardiopulmonary Disease; conducting treatment adherence and self-management research among adults with MS, funded by the National MS Society; and a project funded by the Commission on Rehabilitation Counselor Certification to examine the rehabilitation counseling and psychosocial issues faced by Military Reservists and other personnel returning from Iraq and Afghanistan with a disability. 

Dr. Bishop serves as a council chair in the national leadership of the American Rehabilitation Counseling Association. He is a member of the Epilepsy Foundation’s National Professional Advisory Board as a consultant to the Epilepsy Foundation on psychosocial and employment aspects of epilepsy. He serves on the American Epilepsy Society’s National Task Force on Employment Issues. He is a member of the Scientific Research Advisory Panel of the Commission on Rehabilitation Counselor Certification. He also serves on the editorial boards of three national and international rehabilitation journals and as an ad hoc reviewer for several others. Dr. Bishop has twice received the American Rehabilitation Counseling Association’s Research Award and was the 2005 recipient of the National Council on Rehabilitation Education’s New Career Award.
