The purpose of this Webinar is to offer participants an alternate model that emphasizes an organizational perspective when providing job placement and post-employment services to individuals with disabilities. Rehabilitation professionals are traditionally trained to provide these services from a consumer perspective that focuses on a match between the job duties and the skills of the individual.
In this Webinar we will introduce participants to workplace culture as it relates to the job matching process. Participants will learn about Schein’s (1985) three layer model of workplace culture which includes the values, beliefs and artifacts of the organization. Incorporating the work of Hagner (2000) participants will learn how to identify the artifacts of the workplace when providing job placement and post-employment services so as to optimize a consumer’s successful integration. They will also learn about the different types of cultures (e.g. hierarchical versus clan) in relation to the artifacts that may be observed in these types of settings.
To utilize this model requires rehabilitation professionals to incorporate a consulting role with employers which will also be discussed. Strategies on how to gain access to the employer and evaluate the workplace culture will be addressed considering the consumer’s choice whether to disclose the disability.
Participants will be provided with supplemental materials including A Cultural Fit Worksheet, a Workplace Culture Checklist, and a handout describing the types of workplace culture. As a follow up to this Webinar and for those who are interested, there will be another Webinar on July 22nd, titled, “Strategies for Workplace Adjustment: Using the Stages of Socialization Model.”
