The purpose of this Webinar is to inform participants about the Stages of Socialization Model. This model offers a framework for rehabilitation professionals to work from when supporting consumers during their transition period into a new job. Consumers who walk through the stages effectively are more likely to succeed on the job.
The Stages of Socialization Model describes a three-stage process that new employees experience, beginning with the pre-encounter stage, then the encounter stage, and ending with the role management stage (Jablin, 1987). Participants will learn about the formation of work expectations prior to the first day on the job based on information gathered during the pre-employment phase (job search, interview process, etc). Following will be a discussion about expectation discrepancies between the employer and the new employee that occur during the encounter stage in relation to workplace culture, work roles and behaviors, job tasks, etc. (Jablin, 1987). Participants will learn about the importance of negotiating in this stage and its effect on whether a new employee reaches the role management stage, electing to leave or stay in the organization.
To minimize the potential of significant discrepancies from occurring, the realistic job preview will be introduced as a tool that employers can use during the recruitment process; that rehabilitation providers should advocate for when assisting consumers in the job placement process. During the final segment of the Webinar, tips will be offered on how to assist consumers in managing expectation discrepancies and job roles with respect to all aspects of the job from work tasks to organizational norms.
Participants will be provided with supplemental materials including the Job Expectations Worksheet, Planning for the Future Worksheet, and the Realistic Job Preview -Tips for Employer Handout.
