Psycho-Social Aspects of Disabilities of Disabled Veterans

Webinar

Date:
Thursday: July 30, 2009

Time: 2.0 hours

Presenters:

  • Michael Frain, PhD., CRC
    Rehabilitation Counseling Coordinator
    Florida Atlantic University

Description:

The wars in Afghanistan and Iraq have led to a substantial increase in military personnel with disabilities. For the first time in over 40 years, rehabilitation counselors are working with an influx of veterans with disabilities related to war. The particulars of these wars, (blast injuries, improved armor, needed hyper-vigilance, and a different type of solider) have presented new and unique situations for counselors to address. This webinar focuses on the veteran’s psycho-social adjustment to disability. Participants will be presented with materials and instruction unique to veteran’s issues such as poly-trauma, available services, and the psychological issues of war.

In addition to the psycho-social adjustment to disability, this webinar also includes information concerning laws that are specific to veterans, for example: deployment, returning to work, and employers rights. We will also discuss the counseling and screening techniques for common injuries such as Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI); employment opportunities for rehabilitation counselors who wish to work with veterans; and the approach the rehabilitation field as a whole could take to best serve veterans.
