Description

In the past several years, there has been a surge in family and professional interest, growth and federal support for access to postsecondary education (PSE) for students with intellectual disabilities (SWID). This webinar will review some of the thinking and vision behind this movement, the most recent federal initiatives that support it, give an overview of the national picture of programs that support SWID in PSE settings, and take a look at some of the recent – although limited – research findings about outcomes for students pursuing this option (in the areas of employment, college course access, and transition outcomes in general). Because there are so many different options for providing services and programs to this population in college settings, there is a wide array of service delivery models that exist; a discussion of this variety can help individual states, school systems and postsecondary education institutions decide what works best within their own structures.
